Abdullah Muhareb: Foreign Forces Targeting Nation’s Identity

Cairo- The director general of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALESCO) has said that some foreign forces are targeting the Arab nation’s identity by succeeding in sneaking into the Arab world.

Dr. Abdullah Muhareb revealed to Asharq Al-Awsat his attempts to visit Jerusalem to inaugurate a cultural center of ALESCO.

According to him, Israel adjourned the visit due to concerns of rising Arab presence in Jerusalem.

Muhareb accused Iran of targeting the Arab identity, asserting that the Gulf countries have considerable economic and military potentials and that ISIS is composed of foreign and Iranian intelligence members that know nothing about Islam.

ALECSO’s director general ruled out a huge transformation in U.S. policy towards Arab countries during the presidency of pro-Israel Donald Trump.

Speaking of the threat of ISIS, Muhareb said: “We need a lecturing that is as serious as the danger of ISIS—Lecturing must not be restricted to explanation but should reinforce concepts of peace, tolerance and rejecting racism and extremism.

“Education and media also have a great role to play in distancing the new generation from risks of getting false information about the religion from people who promote murder and destruction.”

He stressed the difficult conditions in the region, saying all sides are being targeted through attempts to incite sectarian, racist and religious divisions.

“Everyone is Arab regardless of any other classification,” he stated.

On another matter, Muhareb underscored the vital role of the Arab World Institute in Paris in spreading the Arab culture in Europe.

A great number of Europeans are showing interest in learning the Arabic Language, he said.

“Yet there is a shortage of specialized instructors because Arab language teachers must speak the Arabic and French languages fluently to be able to deliver the meaning correctly,” added Muhareb.
