A Palestinian prisoner passed away Wednesday in the Israeli Ofer prison, Palestinian sources announced. The Palestinian Prisoners Club said in a statement on Thursday that the detaineem Daoud Al-Khatib, who is a resident of Bethlehem in the West Bank, suffered a heart attack and died few months before his release after serving an 18-year prison sentence. According to the Prisoner’s Club, the total number of Palestinian detainees who died in Israeli prisons while serving their sentences since 1967 has risen to 225. It also said that the Ofer prison’s administration had transferred several prisoners from sections (19) and (20) “where the prisoner Daoud Al-Khatib was detained” to solitary confinement cells after they had been violently repressed.” According to the group's statement, a state of extreme tension prevailed among the prisoners in all Ofer prison sections following the death of Khatib. The prison guards stormed the sections and sprayed the prisoners with gas, suffocating many of them while others were taken to prison cells after being attacked. So far, the prison administration has not provided the prisoners with any medical aid or treatment, although some of them are sick and old, the statement noted. The Prisoner Club added that the “Matsada” unit stormed the prisoners’ sections and deliberately poured water on their bed covers and mixed the food they had, noting that this force is the most belligerent among the Israeli repressive units.
