MWL, OIC to Face Extremism, Promote Coexistence

Makkah- Asharq Al-Awsathe Muslim World League (MWL) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (IOC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday. The MoU aims at bolstering bilateral cooperation in a legal framework and executive mechanisms to complement efforts and coordination in areas of common interest. These include facing extremism, extravagance, and Islamophobia, supporting the values of dialogue and coexistence, and introducing the values of correct Islam that are based on moderation tolerance, and respect for various cultures. MWL Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Abdul Karim al-Issa and OIC Secretary-General Dr. Yousef al-Othaimeen signed the agreement. They agreed to work jointly to organize conferences, seminars, forums, and lectures on various challenges facing the Muslim world. The MoU included 10 articles defining the areas of coordination and cooperation and their mechanisms, a well as the establishment of a joint committee to develop the executive program for projects and the follow-up and assessment procedures. It also included a statement on Islam’s vision of violent extremism, terrorism, intellectual deviation, and contemporary humanitarian issues. Both sides further agreed to cooperate in the fields of Islamic work, educational, cultural, charity, and relief projects. They decided to coordinate efforts on issues addressed by the Islamic nation in international forums and exchange experiences, information, and publications. The cooperation agreement also included cooperation in translating and publishing studies and research on contemporary Islamic reality, its problems and solutions, various development issues, combating terrorism, extremism and Islamophobia, and spreading moderation and tolerance. According to the MoU, the MWL and the OIC will print books and scientific letters that serve Islam and Muslims’ issues and highlight the correct Islamic values, the moderate approach, and peaceful coexistence in human societies. Both sides agreed to serve the Arabic language and boost it among non-speaking societies and groups, especially Muslim minorities.
