Libya Records More Than 29,000 COVID-19 Cases

Libya's COVID-19 cases have increased dramatically with almost 1,000 cases registered every day. The total number of recorded cases reached 29,446 so far, while 15,913 had recovered, according to health officials. Meanwhile, the death toll stands at 460. Medical authorities in eastern and western Libya are holding awareness campaigns to contain the spread of the pandemic. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has called on supervisors of the monitoring and rapid response teams across the country to facilitate the return of recovered citizens to their work and normal lives by filling out a “Coronavirus Recovery Certificate,” that goes in line with the protocol approved by the Center. Dr. Ahmed al-Hassi, vice president and spokesman of the Coronavirus Epidemic Advisory Medical Committee in eastern Libya, said Benghazi Medical Center has organized a two-day workshop for health professionals in the seaports and airports. Hassi said the event focused on introducing the required mechanism to deal with citizens who show symptoms similar to those of COVID-19, as well as training specialists on how to wear protective suits. They learned how to apply precautionary methods to prevent infection and to isolate citizens who had contact with positive cases. Meanwhile, Misrata Medical Center said it performed a “laryngeal incision” surgery on a 73-year-old coronavirus patient, who was on a ventilator in the center’s quarantine department. This operation was not the first of its kind, as Sabha Medical Center performed similar surgeries for coronavirus patients as well.
