Lebanon: With Awareness We Face the Coronavirus
Arab World
Beirut - Asharq Al-AwsatLocal media outlets, mainly television channels, have had a large share in spreading awareness campaigns among residents as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lebanon rose Sunday to 527 with the total number of deaths up by one to 18. Arabic hashtags encouraging people to stay home are up on the screens of channels like LBCI, Al Jadeed and OTV. Before the government’s announcement in mid-March of a "state of medical emergency,” shutting down all public and private institutions except hospitals, pharmacies and bakeries, MTV launched a campaign calling on residents to stay home while An Nahar newspaper adopted the slogan “don’t joke about the virus.” The campaigns received wild applause on social media. The Arabic hashtag “stay at home” was even used as a platform by journalists, politicians and activists who filmed short videos to encourage the Lebanese to respect the government’s measures in reducing the risks of contracting the virus. The Lebanese Army has also launched a campaign on its website and social media accounts using the hashtag “stay at home,” also listing a number of recommendations on the importance of self-isolation and social distancing. As for the Health Ministry, it has sent text messages on mobile phones with the Arabic hashtag “with awareness we face the coronavirus.”
