Iraq: Kadhimi Continues Cautious Talks with Parties to Form Gov
Arab World
Baghdad- Asharq Al-Awsat
Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Mustafa al- Kadhimi is still consulting with different parties to form his cabinet, however, indications show that political blocs are still looking to ensure their own quotas in the new government. Kadhimi stressed in a tweet Sunday that the goal is to establish an efficient and impartial government that faces crises, leads the country toward success, and achieves people's demands. He indicated that consultations with political forces continue in a friendly atmosphere, hoping to overcome the obstacles with positive dialogue. Kadhemi enjoys a political consensus which both his predecessors did not receive. Yet, the Iraqi political system which for 17 years has used quotas in choosing candidates, does not seem ready to sacrifice that even for the emerging crises such as the coronavirus and declining oil prices. Head of the Iraqi Advisory Council Farhad Alaaldin believes that political blocs do not change their intentions unless they are forced to do so. Alaaldin told Asharq Al-Awsat that it is not enough for Kadhimi to be optimistic, even if cautiously, because he believes there are very few political blocs that want change, and for this reason, they will delay the formation of the government. Meanwhile, several names for possible ministers have been leaked to the media since Kadhimi has been named prime minister. The lists included 22 names which sources ensure make up the Iraqi government. The four leaked lists of candidates include many figures that can be in the new government, however, the ultimate goal of uncovering these lists may be to send a message to other figures that they can’t be in the formation or promote certain names hoping Kadhimi would take them into consideration. Member of the Irada movement, MP Hussein Arab said that Kadhimi is under pressure from various political blocs. Arab told Asharq Al-Awsat that Kadhimi has asked parties to let him choose his cabinet and suggested they exchange names of candidates to be agreed upon. Some political blocs are trying to press the PM to name some of their candidates which they see serve their interest, according to Arab. Arab called on the PM-designate to be strong and choose candidates who ensure the success of his cabinet, noting that a strong government can overcome this difficult stage in the history of Iraq.
