Israeli Judiciary Unwilling to Spare Netanyahu Jail Time

Tel Aviv- Asharq Al-Awsat
Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has rejected any prosecution deal with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that would lead to an amnesty in exchange for his retirement from politics. Such a deal is unlikely, he said, since the charges against him are serious and a prison sentence is a must in order to deter other outlaws. These statements were made at one of the discussion sessions held by Mandelblit with officials from the Public Prosecutor's Office. The session was broadcast by KAN 11. Mandelblit underscored the need for presenting complete evidence contained in the indictments to the trial panel, in order to discuss its details. Netanyahu’s corruption issues are unusual, he added, and instead of apologizing he is accusing the Israeli judiciary body and the investigation bodies of framing him. According to KAN 11, Mandelblit affirmed that a prosecution deal with Netanyahu is not an option unless the latter accepts to serve a prison sentence. Notably, Mandelblit filed on Tuesday a formal indictment in court against Netanyahu on charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. MAKAN 33 said that the court in Jerusalem is likely to begin the trial after the Israeli elections on March 2. Netanyahu seeks to consolidate his popularity through defaming the Israeli judiciary in hopes of winning the elections and strengthening his position in negotiations with the public prosecution to seal a deal, said sources close to the PM. The deal would be to pardon him in exchange for his retirement from politics.
